Is this the Golden Age of the Indie film maker? The Making Of 'We Are The Strange'
By: Will Dupré
Since the start of the movie industry, back at the end of the 19th century, the biggest stumbling block has been the cost of production. When even a short film could cost in the tens of thousands of dollars for film costs alone, who except for the big production houses could even consider making professional looking films. In this digital age, however, with a relatively small outlay for off-the-shelf equipment and software, even the home-videographer is free to put out movies with a level of quality and polish that has never before been possible. The democratization of film making has truly arrived with the modern age of digital production and nowhere is this more evident than in the animation field. Only a few years ago computer-generated animation was the realm of big production houses, with custom tools that were simply unavailable to the average animator at any price. Now there are whole suites of off-the-shelf software that do everything from 2d cell-style animation all the way up to advanced dynamics, such as hair and cloth dynamics, and even such cutting edge technologies as muscle deformation rigging.
