Creating A Dolly Zoom Vertigo Effect In After Effects

T-Recs is a time lapse photography company who have created the “zolly” or Dolly Zoom Effect, in which they widen their lens as you are moving towards it and create an illusion that makes background objects seem farther away. This effect can be seen many times throughout movies such like Vertigo (1958), Poltergeist (1982) – just to name few!

Let’s get fancy with this one. The effect of the time lapse is created when you shoot a moving, or walking forward while zooming in on your lens – which changes how much footage will be captured by each individual frame and then played during playback at higher speeds than normal viewing speed for an animated look to it all!

Then in After Effects you are able to stabilize the shot and animate any area of interest pretty simply by adding scale keyframes.
